THE STORY OF BEAU CONSTANTIA
Beau Constantia is a boutique wine farm perched high above Constantia Nek, overlooking the deep blue of False Bay. Its vineyards rise to 362 meters above sea level, making them some of the steepest agricultural slopes in the Cape. From these heights, the vines soak up sweeping views of the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountain ranges, a setting that’s as dramatic as the wines themselves.
About - The Farm
The land’s story begins with renewal. In 2000, devastating fires swept across the property, destroying its fynbos and pine forests. When the smoke cleared, the slopes revealed an incredible opportunity for transformation. In 2002, Pierre and Cecily du Preez purchased the 22-hectare property and began the ambitious process of clearing, terracing, and preparing the land for vineyards. Guided by meticulous soil analysis and the dedication of long-time farm manager Oom Japie Bronn, the first vines were planted in 2003.
What started as a barren, fire-scarred hillside soon became a thriving vineyard, proof of patience, vision, and respect for nature’s resilience. Today, Beau Constantia proudly cultivates 11.47 hectares under vine, planted to both classic and contemporary grape varieties. These include: Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Shiraz, Petit Verdot and Pinot Noir
Among them, Viognier quickly established itself as a standout. The estate’s debut vintage, 2010 Beau Constantia “Cecily” — won Best Viognier at the 2011 Novare Terroir Wine Awards and received 92 points from Neal Martin, renowned critic for Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. And with current accolades our Stella, Syrah being named South African Syrah Trophy Winner and South African Red Wine Trophy Winner, with an outstanding 96 points and Gold Medal at the 2025 International Wine Challenge — Beau Constantia continues to represent South African winemaking excellence on the world stage.
Beau Constantia produces two distinct ranges, each reflecting a different side of the brand’s personality:

Beau constantia range
These are the premium, handcrafted wines expressive and elegant, made with precision and heart.
Pierre: A coastal-inspired blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon — bright, saline, and textured. Defined by precision and purity, it captures the Atlantic’s influence with notes of white peach, lime zest, and subtle minerality.
Cecily: 100% Viognier — elegant and expressive. Fragrant with peach blossom and apricot pip, it balances lush fruit and vibrant acidity, offering a graceful reflection of Constantia’s cool-climate sunshine.
Karin: 100% Cabernet Franc — delicate and stylish. With aromas of elderflower, ruby grapefruit, and passionfruit, it delivers crisp freshness and finesse, embodying quiet confidence and sophistication.
Lucca: A refined Bordeaux-style blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc — graceful, layered, and poised. Aromas of black plum, mulberry, and cassis lead into subtle notes of cedar and warm spice. Silky yet structured tannins frame a palate that balances richness with minerality, finishing with elegance and length.
Aidan: A bold, modern blend of Syrah, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Sauvignon — expressive, plush, and powerful. Layers of dark fruit, cranberry, and cassis are lifted by hints of wild herbs and spice, underpinned by fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. A wine of depth and drive, capturing both energy and intensity.
Stella: A co-fermented blend of Syrah and Viognier — powerful yet poised. Layers of dark fruit, black fig, and wild fynbos unfold into a long, structured finish. Awarded 96 points at the 2025 International Wine Challenge, and winner of both the South African Syrah Trophy and South African Red Wine Trophy.
Each wine is a reflection of the estate’s terrain, climate, and commitment to craft.
What began as a dream between Pierre and Cecily has evolved into a symbol of rebirth and excellence. With deep roots in the Constantia mountains and a young, passionate team at its core, Beau Constantia continues to balance luxury and liveliness, producing wines that tell the story of where they come from and the people who believed in them.
BEAU CONSTANTIA TERROIR
What Is Terroir?
A wine’s terroir refers to the complete natural environment where the grapes are grown the soil, climate, topography, and even the human touch that shapes the wine from vine to
glass. At Beau Constantia, each wine is crafted to capture a sense of place, reflecting the conditions that governed the ripening of its grapes. This approach, known as “fingerprint,
not footprint” winemaking, celebrates individuality and ensures that every wine expresses the character of its origin rather than the imprint of heavy-handed winemaking.
Here below some of the different terroir elements in our wine:
Soil:
Beau Constantia lies on the granitic foot slopes of Table Mountain, where soils are more than 550 million years old. These well-drained decomposed granite soils have high clay content, allowing for excellent water retention and vine balance.
Across the estate, soil types include Hutton, Avalon, Tukulu, Oakleaf, and Glenrosa.
- Glenrosa (derived from shale) is gravelly and dries quickly.
- Oakleaf and Tukulu are rich, fertile red-yellow soils derived from granite, offering
strong physical and moisture-holding properties. - The upper slopes contain younger, decomposed Table Mountain sandstone that
transitions into Glenrosa, while lower down, fertile Oakleaf merges into Tukulu near
the valley floor.
This diversity of soils gives each vineyard block a unique growing environment, one that directly influences the flavour and structure of our wines.
Climate:
Constantia is known as South Africa’s premier cool-climate appellation. Flanked on three sides by the cold Atlantic Ocean, the area benefits from breezes chilled by the Benguela Current, which flows northward from Antarctica. These maritime winds regulate the region’s mild average temperature of 16°C, with February the warmest month, averaging just 20.6°C.
The region receives approximately 1,000mm of rainfall annually, giving vines consistent access to moisture while maintaining freshness and acidity in the fruit. Constantia’s Oceanic climate (rather than Mediterranean) contributes to the crisp, elegant style typical of Beau Constantia wines.
Topography and aspect:
Beau Constantia’s vineyards range from 160 to 362 meters above sea level, creating diverse microclimates across the estate.
Changes in altitude affect sunlight exposure, temperature, and wind all of which influence how the vines grow and ripen. The estate is primarily north-east facing, ideal for red grape varieties that thrive in morning sun and cooler afternoons. Variations in aspect mean that harvest times can differ by weeks, even between blocks separated by only a few meters. This dynamic
Winemaking:
Our winemaking philosophy is rooted in minimal intervention.
The goal is to let the vineyard speak, to produce wines that are an honest expression of this unique terroir. We focus on purity, balance, and precision, crafting wines with natural elegance and structure. Each bottle embodies harmony, an equilibrium between soil, climate, and human care that showcases the true identity of Beau Constantia.
OOM JAPIE
Pas de Nom - Oom Japie Bronn Story:
Pierre and Cecily bought the farm in 2002. Due to a fire erupting and blowing over onto the Constantia Farms, this resulted in the farm burning down. The previous farm was a goat and pine farm – due to this no one wanted to grow vineyards on it. Pierre contacted Japie Bronn (aka Oom Japie) who was in retirement. Oom Japie was instrumental in establishing many vineyards within the Constantia and Cape Point region. Pierre had convinced him to come out of retirement in 2003 assist with planting the first vineyards. He had a huge impact on the Du Preez family and the entire Beau Constantia family.
Once he had officially retired, Beau wanted to celebrate and honour him, he was a very humble, publicly shy man and did not want anything named after him. They came up with the name Pas de Nom which translate to “no name” in French. The bearded label is a visual image of his iconic beard and is the best way to showcase a part of him. He unfortunately passed away in November 2015 and was unable to see the label and range come to life. Fortunately, he was able to see the first fruits come to life and into bottle.
MEGAN - WINEMAKER
Yes, Megan might be the Constantia Valley’s youngest winemaker, but she is a viticulturist first. For that reason, she believes in interfering as little as possible in the processes taking place from vine to wine — a natural journey that absolutely fascinates her. Instead, she spends most of her time on the ground in the vineyards, not only in order to gain a better understanding of the site, but also in an effort to remain in sync with our ever-changing environment – which she deems an incredibly rewarding way to live.
She explains winemaking as “the craft that combines nature with science, art and philosophy in the ultimate pursuit of balance, an equilibrium between all elements” – her philosophy for the vineyards, winemaking and, to an extent, her life as a whole. She believes that you can travel through time with a single sip of wine; that it is possible to connect the human soul to that of the site, and in so allowing the wines to express their heritage and the conditions that governed the ripening of the grapes.
Her career started with a BScAgric degree in Viticulture and Oenology at Stellenbosch University. Shortly after graduating in 2014, she started as Assistant Winemaker at Constantia Glen with the 2015 vintage, where she was able to work closely with the Beau Constantia wines and their incredible pocket of terroir against the upper reaches of the Constantiaberg.
In the years to come she spent a good amount of time chasing the sun around the world, leading her to both Paso Robles, California in 2017 and the Rhône Valley’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape in 2018, whilst returning for the South African vintage in Constantia every year.
In an attempt to understand “why the wine industry works” as opposed to “how it works”, Megan went on to graduate cum laude from UCT’s Graduate School of Business in The Business of Wine in 2019. As an individual that enjoys constant learning, growing and pushing boundaries, Megan jumped at the prospect of taking the reins at Beau Constantia, and in 2019 the vintage kicked off with her at the helm. We have seen her grow from strength to strength with these vineyards since and urge you to sample the carefully preserved fruits of her labour.
This year our winemaker, Megan van der Merwe, has been named the inaugural recipient of MW Tim Atkin’s Rising Star Award. Atkin praised Megan as “the youngest winemaker in Constantia” and “a force of courage, curiosity and conviction” who has “transformed Beau Constantia since taking charge at just 26.” Recognised not only for her dynamic winemaking but also her commitment to promoting education for girls, Atkin described her as “not just a force of courage, but a force of nature.” This new award celebrates the energy and innovation of the next generation of South African winemakers.
